Chapter 14: Indoor Air
Quality
Any new home owner – whether it’s built in a factory or not – needs to be cognizant of indoor air quality issues. Indoor air quality is up to five times more polluted than outside air, and new homes can be especially full of potentially toxic chemicals. They come from the wood used in construction, new carpets, paint and caulk, etcetera. Reoccurring cases of the flu, persistent allergies, regular headaches, or a chronic cough can all be symptoms of toxic indoor air. Extended exposure can result in respiratory diseases, heart disease, and cancer. This chapter examines two likely culprits of toxic air in manufactured homes in particular: formaldehyde and mold. The 10 things you need to know about mold are listed. Specific strategies to reduce indoor pollutants are discussed. Comparisons are made with air quality problems in site-built homes, and code actually favors the manufactured home owner in this regard. A detailed comparison of furnace filters and other air filtration products is also included to help the homeowner meet their particular needs at the most reasonable cost.
