Chapter 9: The Walk-Through(s)
Customers are typically asked to complete one or more "walk-throughs" before the home is officially delivered to their site. This is a formal procedure which involves written documents designed to protect the manufacturer and dealership. The purpose is to document any problems with the home, and to provide the dealership a way of showing the customer has accepted any corrections. Duplicitous stratagems are employed at this stage as well. Some customers are asked to go ahead and sign off on extra blank, post-dated walk-through sheets so they won’t have to make "additional trips" to the dealership. In effect, they’re being asked by the dealership to sign a document stating any necessary corrections have been made to their satisfaction even before any repairs are made! Specific trouble spots to look for are listed, as well as more strategies to help the consumer beat the dealer at their own game. You'll need to bring your toolkit from your home shopping trips as well . . .
